OFF GROUNDS JOB AND INTERNSHIP SEARCH: BEYOND HANDSHAKE
The off-grounds job/internship search requires switching from a "apply for jobs" mindset to a "seek out jobs" mindset. Instead of waiting for jobs to appear in Handshake that look interesting, you're going to seek out positions that fit best with your interests and skills. It takes time and effort but you can do it! Here's a framework to help you get started:
1. Build your “personal advisory board” by finding UVA alums, friends, family members, other professionals who can help you gather information and give advice:
LinkedIn - Use the alumni tool to find UVA alums working all over the world in a wide range of positions
Virginia Mentoring Program (VAM) - Connect with a UVA alum who is eager to share knowledge and experience as a mentor
Tips on building your network - Research other ways to effectively build your network
2. Build your list of companies:
Handshake – Go to “jobs” in the blue bar, then “employers” in the Job Search bar
CareerShift – Search companies by keyword, industry and location
LinkedIn - Use keywords to find companies (and the people working there) that match your interests
Specialty Job Boards - Browse niche job boards that focus on just a particular industry or skill set
Suggestions from professors, family and friends, and news sources
3. Find HR/Recruiting contacts or other professionals at those companies
Ask Engineering Career Center counselors for appropriate contacts from Handshake database
CareerShift – Search “contacts” by company and job title
LinkedIn - Search "xyz company recruiter/human resources" to find contacts
4. Search company websites for job postings from your list you built and use specialty job boards to find open positions.
5. Use LinkedIn to find UVA alums at the companies where you're applying. You can ask them if they would have a few minutes to talk with you about the company and their career path to help you prepare for a potential interview.
