Ever wish you could spend time with a company you're interested in – even if just a few hours – to learn what working there is really like?
You can through an EXternship!
Externships are short-term opportunities that allow you to gain insight into a career of interest. At a company of interest you might meet various employees in the organization, go on an office tour, participate in a hands-on activity, and/or sit in on team meetings.

The annual Engineering, Science & Technology Career Fair is just a week away – and it’s virtual this year! We’ve created this guide to help you prep for and navigate the event.
First, complete these 5 key steps BEFORE the fair:
- Complete this survey. You’ll learn about important policies for participating in events with employers.
- Update your Handshake profile. This will allow you to register for 1:1 chats with employers. PLUS, employers will have an opportunity to search student profiles and reach out to YOU first.
- Register for the Career Fair before the event.
- Once registered, review the list of employers participating in the fair. Build a schedule in advance of the fair by signing up for 1:1 and group sessions of interest.
- Make a plan for how you want to spend the 10 minutes you’d have to chat with a company rep during scheduled 1:1 conversations.
Thank you to our event sponsors DPR Construction (Silver), Verisign (Silver), and ST Engineering (Bronze).

We’ve heard from many Engineering and CS students who want to use their time off in January to work on career development, whether that’s teaching themselves a new skill, working on personal projects, or working on their job/internship search. With that in mind, we’ve designed Spring Career Week, 5 days of career tips and advice sent straight to your inbox PLUS virtual workshops hosted by alumni, recruiters, and career advising pros.
Every morning the week of January 25th, we’ll send you an email on a different topic, including a relevant action step that’s short enough to complete THAT day.
From there, design your own Career Week schedule by selecting one or more virtual sessions to attend! You’ll find event descriptions and links below, as well as within Handshake (just search Events for “Career Week”). Questions? Email hpalmer@virginia.edu.

It's almost time for an extra long winter break!
We hope that the break is a time for rest, reflection, hobbies, personal projects, catching up with friends and family - and maybe a J-Term course or academic/professional projects sprinkled in.
Before final exams wrap up, our team wants you to know about our winter break office hours (we're open!), ideas for career-related activities you can participate in over the break, and early spring career events so you can save the dates now.
