What’s worse than hearing “Thanks for applying but we’ve decided to go with another candidate”?
January 14, 2021
We’ve heard from many Engineering and CS students who want to use their time off in January to work on career development, whether that’s teaching themselves a new skill, working on personal projects, or working on their job/internship search. With that in mind, we’ve designed Spring Career Week, 5 days of career tips and advice sent straight to your inbox PLUS virtual workshops hosted by alumni, recruiters, and career advising pros.
Every morning the week of January 25th, we’ll send you an email on a different topic, including a relevant action step that’s short enough to complete THAT day.
From there, design your own Career Week schedule by selecting one or more virtual sessions to attend! You’ll find event descriptions and links below, as well as within Handshake (just search Events for “Career Week”). Questions? Email firstname.lastname@example.org.

It's almost time for an extra long winter break!
We hope that the break is a time for rest, reflection, hobbies, personal projects, catching up with friends and family - and maybe a J-Term course or academic/professional projects sprinkled in.
Before final exams wrap up, our team wants you to know about our winter break office hours (we're open!), ideas for career-related activities you can participate in over the break, and early spring career events so you can save the dates now.

The annual Global Week at UVA kicks off today! Global Week offers you an opportunity to explore global internships, international career paths, and programs to help you study, research, and go abroad. There are even opportunities to explore global experiences virtually.
To celebrate Global Week within Engineering and Computer Science, we asked two current students and two alumni to tell us about their global experiences. Read on to learn about the adventures of Hanbin, Gabby, George, and Senthil. Then, learn how you can share your story.

Whenever our career advisors meet with 1st and 2nd Years, students often want to know if employers hire 1st and 2nd Years as interns (and if not, how do other Engineers spend their summers). Let's review several summer programs designed specifically for you, along with additional ideas for how to spend your summers.

When students think of a career advising office, they often think about internships and jobs, resumes and cover letters, interviewing, and networking. Did you know that our team also advises students interested in exploring and applying to grad school?
Along with our colleagues, we recently hosted a series of events to help you learn more about graduate school, whether you're a 2nd Year wondering if grad school is for you or a 4th Year who's currently working on applications.
Read a recap of each event and watch recordings if you missed the live events. When you're ready to meet with a career advisor to talk about grad school, select the "Applying to grad school" appointment option within Handshake.

We’re only a month into the fall semester, but we know many of you are already thinking about Summer 2021 internships.
Our career advising team is here to support you in your summer internship search. We also encourage students to explore the many ways you can gain experience during the academic year. From self-paced skill building courses, to short-term projects (a great way to try something out without a summer-long commitment), to remote internships – you can choose when and how you explore your interests outside of the classroom.
We’ll be sure to update this post with more opportunities as we learn of them.
