Photo Contest Results

Annually, we hold a photo contest in which Engineering students share their education abroad experience with photographs. These pictures embody students' favorite memories, experiences, and friendships that they obtained throughout their international experience. Some of the students are international students sharing their global experience in the States. After careful consideration of all the submissions, the winning photos of the 2019-2020 Photo Contest have been finalized. The photographs will be hung before the Fall semester welcoming the students return to campus.

The results for the Photo Contest are FINALLY OUT! There was a wide pool of phenomenal photos from various students but the winning photographs are listed below. Enjoy these beautiful photos taken by our students!

First Place: “Estamos Felices” by Alexandra Schmid

“This photo was taken in the Guatemalan city of Quetzaltenango, also known as Xela, on a pedestrian bridge with small phrases, graffiti, and locks. “Estamos felices” means “we are happy” in Spanish.” - International Program: UVA in Guatemala May Term (Quetzaltenango, Guatemala)

People's Choice 1st Place Award: "Placa de la Reina" by Tristan White

“The Plaça de la Reina pictured in the bottom left is instantly recognizable to anyone who has spent any time in Valencia. I took this picture on Thanksgiving Day from atop the Valencia Cathedral when I was spending the day with my family.” - UVA in Valencia (Valencia, Spain)

People's Choice 2nd Place Award: "Depart at Daybreak" by Zachary Keys

“Photo taken along the Camino de Santiago in Galicia, Spain. During the fall break, I took this photo of some pilgrims as they were walking in the early morning light. During this trip I met people from Argentina, Spain, Australia, and the US.” - UVA in Valencia (Valencia, Spain)

People's Choice 3rd Place Award: "The Alps" by Katherine Ellis

“Included in the GTP program is a group trip to the Alps, where we all stayed in a hostel in Austria. This trip brought our group closer and was a great outdoor experience, different from the rest of the program in the city.” - UVA in Germany

Honorable Mention: “The Marrakesh Express” by Zachary Key

“Picture shot outside of Marrakesh, Morocco, on a camel caravan to the Atlas Mountains. Our group learned some Berber history while riding camelback into the desert. We also had the opportunity to try some traditional Moroccan dishes and hike in the mountains.” -UVA in Valencia (Marrakesh, Morocco)

“I took this picture near sunset at the Palácio da Pena in Sintra, Portugal. I would absolutely recommend going to Sintra if you’re going through Lisbon and want to do a day trip.” -International Program: UVA in Valencia (Sintra, Portugal)

    Description: “Within the Doge Palace in Venice, the Bridge of Sighs leads from the palace interrogation rooms to the prisons. Story says the bridge was named this because as prisoners walked through they would stop and sigh as they saw the outside world for the last time through the cracks.”

    Description: “We lived at a small local hut during our four-day stay in the Alps. We slept in the same rooms, chitchatted around the campfire, met new friends from other countries, and went stargazing together. The hut has all out good memories, and thereby I consider it home.”
