James Harrison, MD, PhD, is a board-certified pathologist, Associate Professor, and Director of Clinical Laboratory Informatics in the Department of Pathology at UVA. He has over 25 years of experience in the field of medical informatics, including work in clinical laboratory information systems, electronic health records, clinical research data capture, management, and analysis, and World Wide Web development. He has received funding as PI for T-15 and R-01 grants from the National Library of Medicine and the National Cancer Institute. He contributes to the implementation and optimization of the Epic electronic health record in the UVA Health System, particularly as it relates to clinical research and clinical laboratory operations. He is active in international medical data standards development and is a member of the HL7 standards organization (www.hl7.org) and the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Workgroup of the IHE (www.ihe.net). In the College of American Pathologists national organization he is the incoming chair of the Informatics Committee and a member of the Information Technology Leadership Committee, and he chairs the Machine Learning Workgroup under the Informatics Committee. He also serves on the Health Information Technology Standards Advisory Council and All-Payer Claims Database Steering Committee of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
