Researchers are improving the placement of pacemakers through cardiac image analysis.


Miaomiao Zhang, assistant professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Miaomiao Zhang is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering with a joint appointment in the Department of Computer Science. She is an expert in developing new machine learning techniques for biomedical image analysis. For example, Zhang has worked with large image collections like MRI, ultrasound, and CT scans, to develop advanced applications like image-guided neurosurgery, analyzing faces for pain prediction, and monitoring pregnancy health. At UVA, she is partnering with clinicians in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and biomedical engineers to improve the effectiveness of implanted cardiac resynchronization therapy devices (e.g. pacemakers). Because MRI scans are taken during the CRT placement procedure, cardiac images provide the information needed for building an algorithm that automatically detects where to place the pacing catheters for activation of a normal heart rhythm — invaluable information for surgeons.
