Congratulations to these students who have earned the PhD in Computer Science!

Saeed Mahloujifar

"Thanks to Mohammad for 5 years of fantastic mentorship. I cannot say enough about how much I learned from him. He taught me how to enjoy doing research and it's because of him that I'm still enjoying it. It's fascinating how much I learned and changed during my Ph.D. studies and I am extremely happy that I passed through this period with the guidance of an excellent mentor."

Sarah has been recognized as one of the Rising Stars in EECS in 2020, an international cohort of future female faculties in EECS who demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to advancing equity and inclusion. She is a recipient of the UVA Graduate Commonwealth Fellowship, the Adobe Research Scholarship, the NSF Smart and Connected Health Student Award, and the UVA Big Data Fellowship.

"I am forever thankful to my Ph.D. advisor, Professor Jack Stankovic, who has been a constant source of guidance, inspiration, and support. I have learned so much from him about research, academia, mentoring, and life in general. He is the best advisor one could ever ask for. I hope to treat my students with the same level of kindness, compassion, and respect that Jack has shown towards me. Professor Homa Alemzadeh has been a great mentor and role model for me. We closely collaborated on a research project and I really enjoyed working with her. She also supported me unconditionally in my academic job search. I thank her for all of her support and guidance. I also whole-heartedly thank all of my thesis committee members and collaborators, including, Professor Ronald Williams, Professor Laura Barnes, Professor Alfred Weaver, Professor Hongning Wang, Professor Kai-Wei Chang, and Professor Jack Davidson."

Reducing Network Latency for Web Applications in a Datacenter
  • More about his dissertation

With the rapid development of web applications in data centers, network latency becomes more important to user experience. The network latency will be greatly increased by incast congestion, in which a huge number of requests arrive at the front-end server simultaneously. Previous congestion problem solutions usually handle the data transmission between the data servers and the front-end server directly, and they are not sufficiently effective in proactively avoiding incast congestion. In my dissertation, we introduce three congestion control algorithms that aim to improve the latency and throughput concurrently.

"I really appreciate all the faculty members' valuable suggestions and help. Thanks to my advisor Prof. Shen, the collaborator and committee member Prof. Charles Reiss, Prof. Yangfeng Ji, Prof. Lu Feng, and Prof. Cong Shen."
