Creative Interaction Design
Creative Interaction Design will be an immersive, hands-on experience in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The program will expose students to the creative process of designing interactive products for public spaces of cultural & touristic interest in Crete, Greece.
Students will work in a fast-paced environment, identifying real-world problems and designing and prototyping innovative solutions in a group setting. Participating students will work in groups with local students from the University of Crete, Department of Computer Science, and in collaboration with the Foundation of Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) . Student groups will also receive feedback from pre-determined stakeholders in their design domain, acting as clients.
This program is designed to be a highly immersive, hands-on experience with limited traditional instruction time. Students will be working on their own in groups, with some facilitation by the program director and a host instructor, and will be producing artifacts which will be used for assessment (i.e., contextual inquiry data, models, designs, prototypes, evaluation results, etc.) Creativity workshops and activities will be conducted throughout, including creativity assignments and challenges, to help students unleash their creative side. A local instructor from FORTH, expert in HCI and creativity, and a teaching assistant, recent UVA graduate, will ensure the best learning experience for participants. More than anything else, this is a real-world experience on UX design, spanning beyond the application of skills acquired in the prerequisite course (CS3205@UVA or CS3724@VT), including intercultural interactions with local students and clients.
The course counts as a 3-credit elective (UVA) or transfer credit (non-UVA) and is open to UVA and VT undergraduate students with some experience in HCI/UX. Within the 25 days of the program, students will be exposed to the Greek and Cretan culture through various ways, such as museum visits, attending festivals and concerts, experiencing the amazing Mediterranean cuisine, and mostly interacting with the locals.
