Diversity and Inclusion in BME

We are committed to creating and sustaining an inclusive environment where our entire community can thrive. Diversity and inclusion create a better student experience, faculty career, and culture. It helps to develop better biomedical engineers. We want you to feel valued and welcomed. Therefore, we have implemented a proactive strategy that respects and values all members in order to create a more diverse department.

Our Goals

  • Attract and retain pioneering faculty in the field of Biomedical Engineering

Our goal is to create a department where every faculty member has the opportunity to excel

A diverse faculty addresses society's most challenging health problems more effectively and equitably, while providing role models for the next generation of biomedical engineers. We welcome applications from faculty of color and women at all stages of their careers for positions in our department. Here's how we're Welcoming Dual Careers, Leading Search Committees, Spreading the Word, and Building Relationships.

  • Increase Graduate Student Diversity

Our goal is to train a graduate student body that reflects the population we serve

Diversity isn't limited to cultural, ethnic, gender, and sexual orientation differences. It also encompasses socio-economic, learning, family, and other differences. Addressing society's complex challenges will require everyone's talents and perspectives. Our differences are our strengths, and a graduate student body that reflects the population we serve will be more creative and innovative and will generate the new ideas and novel approaches we need to tackle problems in biomedical engineering. Here's how we're working towards our goals by Moving the Bar, Targeting Recruitment, and Cultivating a Culture of Inclusion.

  • Increase Undergraduate Student Diversity

Our goal is to harness the strategic value of diversity and inclusion across UVA's educational and research mission

Addressing society's complex challenges will require everyone's talents and perspectives. We want to harness the strategic value of diversity and inclusion across UVA's educational and research mission, and our vibrant and engaged undergraduate student community is a key partner in that effort.  One of the first steps in meeting our goals for diveristy and inclusion among our undergraduate students was Ending Enrollment Caps.
