AIChE Student Chapter

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) student chapter at the University of Virginia is an active academic organization that promotes the professional development of its members along with the development of Chemical Engineering at the University. AIChE at UVA provides an outlet for the social enjoyment of its members through its events, relationships with other student chapters and the parent body of AIChE, and faculty and staff of the Chemical Engineering Department at UVA. AIChE at UVA hosts a ChemE Car team and contributes to the community through its service branch, Wahoo Wizards

Joining AIChE is easy and comes with lots of benefits. Generally people join at the beginning of the school year, but membership is open any time. Just ask an executive board member, and they will be happy to point you in the right direction. By choosing to sign up for local membership, you will get national membership for free.

Benefits of local membership include support to attend AIChE conferences and access to all the UVa AIChE events. National membership affords even more benefits, detailed at the AIChE National website.

Our chapter hosts monthly meetings (with food), which address topics such as graduate schools, jobs, interviewing skills, the senior thesis, and leadership. We organize visits to chemical plants to expose students to chemical engineering in practice, host a variety of alumni speakers throughout the year, and organize a Chemical Engineering dedicated networking night feature companies like Exxon, Syngenta, Merck, and more. Our chapter also hosts social events such as dinner and bar nights and a semi-formal dance.

Local membership is $20.

There are several benefits of being in the national AIChE organization. These benefits include chances to network with chemical engineers nationwide; discounts on chemical engineering conference; a subscription to Chemical Engineering Progress, which details developments in chemical engineering; career and employment services; and personal financial benefits such as insurance coverage and discounts on auto rentals. Membership can be continued after graduation for help in starting a career.
