    Erin Griffiths receives her doctoral degree in computer science from the UVA Engineering Department of Computer Science on May 16, 2020. Her dissertation explored some of the practical uses and challenges of sensing and reasoning in ambient intelligence environments. Ms. Griffiths co-authored numerous papers while at UVA Engineering and also served as a teaching assistant for several computer science courses.

    Ms. Griffiths was additionally a research intern at Microsoft, where she is now a software engineer. Prior to this she completed a research internship at the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute. There she created a new data placement service for a grid computing system.

  • Avinash Kalyanaraman

    Avinash Kalyanaraman receives his doctoral degree in computer science from the UVA Engineering Department of Computer Science on May 16, 2020. His dissertation explored the usage of wireless radar signals to sense context in indoor human environments. Kalyanaraman co-authored numerous papers while at UVA Engineering and also served as a teaching assistant for several computer science courses.

    Mr. Kalyanaraman, with fellow Ph.D. student Elaheh Soltanaghaei and Commonwealth Associate Professor Kamin Whitehouse, won the best poster award in MobiSys Women's Workshop for their poster: Occupancy State Detection using WiFi Signals. Kalyanaraman has also completed research internships with NEC Laboratories in the Mobile Communications and Networking Group and with Robert Bosch GmbH where he worked in the usage of UWB wireless sensors for first responder applications.

    Elaheh Soltanaghaei receives her doctoral degree in computer science from the UVA Engineering Department of Computer Science on May 16, 2020. Ms. Soltanaghaei’s dissertation explored the possibility of a WiFi-enabled device being transformed into an individual sensor that learns about the environment, leading to a scalable sensing platform. She has received multiple accolades:

    • Rising Stars in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2019

    Ms. Soltanaghaei is conducting her post-doctoral research at Carnegie Mellon University in cyber-physical systems, wireless sensing, “internet of things,” and computer networking.
