Welcome to Engineering Systems and Environment Briefs, a place to find quick notes and posts from our department faculty, students, staff and alumni.

    Our first video abstract

    March 05, 2013

Our new Environmental Research Letters paper entitled “Quantifying the total cost of infrastructure to enable environmentally preferable decisions: the case of urban roadway design” will appear here soon. In the meantime, we’ve prepared our first video abstract and you can watch it here. Check it out! Many thanks to Katie Cleary for her amazing video production skills!

    Shibo defends PhD dissertation!

    February 17, 2013

Shibo became VESTlab PhD graduate #1 on Friday with an awesome defense of his dissertation entitled, the role of interfacial properties in leakage from GCS sites. Now he’s off to China for a few weeks of well deserved R&R before returning to start his new position at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Congrats to Shibo!! Very nice work!

Alec named UVa SEAS Graduate Teaching Fellow

    January 22, 2013

This new program is intended to allow senior PhD students the opportunity to get in the classroom and gain some valuable teaching experience. Alec will use his fellowship to co-teach the graduate level Industrial Ecology course being offered by Prof. Clarens. Alec was one of 5 students selected from the entire school of engineering and the prize included financial support for him for the semester. Congrats to Alec!

    Andres wins NSF CAREER Award!

    January 12, 2013

The award will allow our group to explore carbon sequestration in shales as a way to mitigate some of the climate impacts of unconventional fossil fuel deployment.

Shibo’s bubble rise paper featured on AGU blog

    August 25, 2012

blog piece describing one of our more recent papers is featured on the American Geophysical Union website!

Alec presents plenary talk at Internation Symposium on Life Cycle Assessment and Construction

    August 02, 2012

The talk, which focused on some of his new research into road maintenance under environmental and cost constraints, was well received. You can read more about the meeting here.

    Alec’s paper accepted

    August 02, 2012

Alec’s first paper on managing pavements for minimal greenhouse gas emissions was accepted by the Journal of Infrastructure Systems – ASCE. It should appear online here soon!

    MWF modeling paper accepted!

    August 02, 2012

Shibo’s metalworking fluid penetration paper was accepted in the Journal of Manufacturing Processes. This was the product of his MS research that built off Andres’ PhD dissertation. A model like this is missing in the literature and even thought the model is not ‘simple’ (despite our best efforts to make it simple) we expect that it will be useful to others trying to study this problem.

Xiaowei and Shane successfully defended their proposals for PhD research

    August 02, 2012

Congrats to Xiaowei (who defended in mid July) and to Shane (who defended in mid June)!
