    Alec Defends MS Thesis

    His thesis work was focused on developing a multiobjective tool for pavement management that incorporates greenhouse gas emissions into conventional performance and cost metrics. Congratulations Alec!!


    Andres and Lisa Colosi have been awarded a prestigious FEST award.

    The highly competitive FEST (Fund for Excellence in Science and Technology) awards are given to junior faculty in their first three years at UVa. The $50,000 prize will be used to support Shane’s work in using algae to remove emerging (e.g., estrogenic) contaminants from wastewaters in while producing bioenergy.     VESTlab wins a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to support research into gas expanded lubricants (GELs)!

    The three year, $300,000 award is aimed at improving the energy efficiency of turbine systems using GEL technology and will support a new PhD student in our lab.


    Andres named 2010-11 University Teaching Fellow

    CEE 2100 – Introduction to Environmental Engineering.

    The second offering of this course in the Spring 2010 will focus on how we can all become ‘sustainability engineers’. This year we have nearly 90 students enrolled from across grounds! We’re also offering a complimentary 1-credit lab section (CEE 2110) this term for the first time ever!


    VESTlab team wins 1st runner up in 2009 ConocoPhillips – Penn State Energy Prize!

    Competition is designed to identify ‘game changing’ technology in energy production and consumption. The team from our lab was selected from over 170 submissions for our concept to deliver “gas-expanded lubricants” for improved efficiency in wind turbines. The competition included a presentation in front of a panel of judges at ConocoPhillips headquarters in Houston. You can learn more about the prize here.


    Andres, Fu Zhao (Purdue) and Jaime Camelio (Virginia Tech) co-chaired a session on Sustainable Manufacturing Processes at the ASME International Conference on Manufacturing Science and Engineering in October at Purdue University.
