Writing Management Tools Showcase- Fall 2018

Need a way to keep track of all those pdfs? Wish you had software that made dissertation writing easier? Tired of struggling with Word? Then join us for this software showcase and see what else is out there.

3-4pm Wed. Sept 19 | Rice 011 (downstairs)

organizer: Christian Howard, Graduate Writing Lab

refreshments provided

This showcase gives graduate students the the opportunity to try out a number of different types of software for writing (ex. Latex, Scivener, Ulysses, emacs) and reference management (Zotero, Mendeley, Endnote). Using a reference manager can be critical for keeping track of everything you've read or cited throughout graduate school and starting early can make dissertation writing later much easier. And it can make formatting all those citations and reference lists much faster and easier to transfer from one style to another (useful when submitting to journals). By combining writing, referencing and formatting software, you can create a workflow that makes your writing work for you.

Join us at this showcase to see some of your software choices and talk to people who use them in their own work. You can see options side-by-side, ask questions, request in depth workshops on particular software, and hopefully find something you're excited to try with your own work.

Reference Management Software

  • Endnote
  • Zotero
  • Mendeley
  • Papers
  • Refworks

Writing Software

  • LaTex
  • Overleaf
  • Scrivener
  • EMacs
  • Ulysses

One or more presenters knowledgeable about or actively using each option will be set up with the software running so you can see how it works, try it and ask questions. The software options do not represent all of your choices but should give you a good place to start when considering what might make graduate level research writing (journal papers, thesis, dissertation) and technical writing easier. Handouts with follow up 'how to' workshop schedule on select software will be available at the events & the GWL.

This is a UVA Engineering Graduate Writing Lab event designed for UVA Engineering graduate students but other UVA engineering students, faculty, postdocs and staff as well as graduate students from across the university are welcome to attend.

Registration is not required, but we ask that you sign in at the event.
