New Collaboration Lab to Explore Hemp-based Building Materials

    March 16, 2022

Osman Ozbulut together with and Lisa Colosi-Peterson from Department of Engineering Systems and Environment and Katie MacDonald from School of Architecture have launched “Hemp CoLab”, a new collaboration lab funded by Environmental Resilience Institute (ERI). Hemp CoLab seeks to advance scholarship in hemp-based construction by catalyzing interdisciplinary research and developing sustainable building materials. Industrial hemp is ideal for carbon sequestration as it absorbs more carbon dioxide (CO2) per hectare than any forest or commercial crop during plantation growth, making it one of the most sustainable crops available. Hemp CoLab aims to connect faculty and students working on industrial hemp across the Grounds and explore the use of hemp in development of sustainable building materials.
