Hispanic Heritage month is happening right now, from September 15th to October 15th! To celebrate Hispanic Engineers, we’re highlighting some of the organizations and resources below.

Hispanic Student Organizations at UVA

Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE)
“SHPE is the nation’s largest association dedicated to fostering Hispanic leadership in the STEM field.” Better yet, SHPE has their very own UVA chapter! Join SHPE at UVA to become part of the community, be connected to opportunities, and learn more about career-building opportunities in engineering. Follow them on Instagram to receive updates about upcoming programs and events.

Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE)
HACE strives to ‘cultivate the pipeline of Latino talent’ and strives for ‘a world where Latinos reach their full potential.’ Join this professional network to find featured jobs, programs including leadership development programs, and networking events including career fairs, coffee chats, and symposiums.

Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA)

ALPFA currently serves 95,000+ professional and student members across the United States and seeks to support Latino talent. Their page features a job board, events like the Fall 2021 Virtual Student Symposium, programs such as the “2021 Most Powerful Latinas”, and scholarships.

Opportunities & Resources for Hispanic Students

Center for Diversity in Engineering (CDE)
The CDE, located in the D-Wing of Thornton Hall right off of E-Way, is a great space where students come together to study, rest, get snacks, meet for clubs, or just chat between classes. The CDE is run by Student Associates with experience in “career development, community outreach, equity in education, academic success, leadership development, marketing, and diversity programming.” This space is specifically meant to create a community for underrepresented groups in STEM including racial minorities, female, first-generation and low-income, and LGBTQ+ identifying students. Stop by the CDE to meet some great people, and follow them on Instagram to stay up to date on exciting events, including those featuring Hispanic Heritage Month!
