Postdoctoral Research Associate in Civil and Environmental Engineering
The Infrastructure Simulation SEnsing, Evaluation Laboratory (I-S2EE) investigates the opportunities provided by visual sensing technologies, computational mechanics, and artificial intelligence to tackle with the increasing multiplex problem in the existing built infrastructure. I-S2EE laboratory within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to participate in a multi-disciplinary collaborative research projects related to informative digital twinning for large-scale structural systems. The candidate is expected to engage in research activities that leverage tools from the domains of vision-based experimental mechanics, model-based computational mechanics, and computational vision strategies such as deep learning, and mixed reality visualization. Prior experience with experimental testing of civil and/or mechanical systems is preferred and candidates with strong programming and analytical skills are encouraged to highlight relevance in the application materials.

Postdoctoral Research Associate - Mobile Sensing for Personalized Digital Mental Health
The Sensing Systems for Health Lab at the University of Virginia is recruiting a highly motivated candidate with experience in mobile / wearable sensing, software development, machine learning, and signal processing to work on funded research focused on personalized digital mental health. Specifically, the grant focuses on passively sensing social anxiety in daily life and providing a mobile phone-based JITAI to reduce anxious thinking.
Candidates will have a Ph.D. in computer science, information science, biomedical informatics, or related field. They should have demonstrated excellence in one or more of the following fields as evidenced by publications in top tier journals and conferences: machine learning, signal processing, behavioral science, mobile / wearable sensors, human factors, or human-centered computing. The successful applicant will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to develop software and computational models that leverage data from mobile devices like smartphones and smartwatches to deliver just-in-time interventions for anxiety disorders.
Interested candidates should send their detailed CV, a cover letter describing training and research experience, and the names and contact information of three references. Please address correspondence to Dr. Laura Barnes and send by email to lb3dp@virginia.edu with the subject line: "Postdoctoral Position".
Postdoctoral Research Associate - Augmented Reality for Cognitive Assistance in Emergency Response
The Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia seek to hire a postdoctoral research associate in the Link Lab (https://engineering.virginia.edu/link-lab) in the area of Learning Enabled Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) for Smart Health.
This position will support research projects on design and validation of Context-Aware Cognitive Assistant Systems that combine wearable sensing, embedded computing, and artificial intelligence capabilities (such as speech processing, computer vision, natural language processing, and explainable machine learning) to provide situational awareness and safety assurance in the human-in-the-loop CPS, with applications to emergency response.
The candidate is expected to produce high quality and novel research ideas for publications in top-tier conferences and journals, contribute to writing research grant proposals, present research findings at international conferences and PI meetings, and build and maintain CPS testbeds in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers. They will also be expected to take a leadership role within the lab, which involves assisting in the training of graduate and undergraduate students.
