Professor Receives Air Force Young Investigator Research Program Award

James T. Burns, assistant professor in the University of Virginia Department of Materials Science and Engineering, is a recipient of a 2016 Air Force Young Investigator Research Program (YIP) Award.

According to a news release, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research bestows the awards to foster creative basic research in science and engineering, enhance early career development of outstanding young investigators, and increase opportunities for the young investigators to recognize the Air Force mission and the related challenges in science and engineering.

The awards program is competitive. The Air Force received more than 265 applications this year. Burns and 55 other scientists and engineers from 41 research institutions and small businesses were selected to receive a total of $20.6 million in grants.
