Biomedical Engineering Professor Earns NASA Funding
As NASA makes plans for future space exploration beyond low Earth orbit, it is looking to answer questions about the long-term health of its astronauts.
Silvia Blemker, an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia, is one of the researchers contributing to that knowledge base. Professor Blemker’s research proposal, “Development of a Muscle Adaptation in Space-Flight Simulator,” was recently selected for funding by NASA’s Human Research Program and the National Space Biomedical Research Institute. The proposal was one of 27 projects selected from 131 submissions.
Professor Blemker’s research focuses on the musculoskeletal system. She was recently elected program chair of the American Society of Biomechanics for 2016-2017.
