Helmke Becomes the Inaugural Director of Undergrad Research

Brian Helmke, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, has accepted the position of Director of Undergraduate Research in UVA Engineering.  This is a new leadership position for the School, and it emerges from the pride UVA Engineering takes in giving students an outstanding educational experience that includes a significant experiential component.

Dr. Helmke’s leadership and his experience with undergraduate research puts him in a strong position to organize and promote the research experience for our undergraduates.  He plans to implement longstanding ideas on how research can be integrated with the overall undergraduate educational experience, including ensuring that the experience is accessible to all students.  He will also establish assessment of the impact of research on the undergraduate program and student outcomes.

Congratulations, Brian Helmke!  BME's advice to undergraduate researchers is HERE.
