Data science is defining the field of biomedical engineering

The department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia has taken a number of steps to reflect the critical importance of biomedical data sciences and systems biology to the future of health care, medicine and biomedical research. Here is a round-up of recent news related to the department's vision and leadership for biomedical data sciences and systems biology at UVA and beyond.

By the numbers

In 2019 there were 13 faculty in our biomedical data sciences and systems biology group.

In 2019, the group totaled $6.7 million in sponsored research expenditures.

12 of 13 faculty in this group are Principal Investigators on major NIH or NSF awards. 

No. 13 is Phil Bourne, and he is the acting dean of UVA's new School of Data Science. 

In 2020, the group will grow to 15 faculty members
