Degree Program Requirements
Degree programs admission and requirements
After an application has been submitted to Virginia Engineering Online (VEO), the application materials are reviewed, an admission decision is made, and the student is notified via email that a change has been made to the application status at the online application site. Applicants are prompted to check the site for the update and, if offered admission, may accept their admission offer online. Once the official acceptance is made through the application site, the applicant becomes a degree-seeking student with the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science. Prospective students who are interested in taking a class before officially applying to a degree program may do so.
Grades and Grade Point Average (GPA)
Only courses in which a grade of C or better is achieved can be applied toward the degree. GPA calculation includes all grades, however. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be maintained at all times. A student is placed on academic probation should his or her GPA fall below 3.0. If the GPA cannot be raised to 3.0 or higher, the student will be subject to dismissal from the program. These cases are monitored by the Engineering School Graduate Registrar's Office.
30 credit hours, or ten 3-credit courses, is the class requirement by all UVA online master’s degree programs.
Plan of Study
A Plan of Study should be completed and submitted to the Office of Educational Innovation. The plan can be altered later if program changes are made. Only courses on an approved Plan of Study will be accepted toward the Master of Engineering degree. See additional information pertaining to requirements for the Masters of Engineering Degree as published in the Graduate Record.
A transfer form should be submitted with the Plan of Study if classes taken at other participating universities are to be applied toward a University of Virginia degree. A maximum of 15 credits may be transferred in to a VEO degree program. Courses to be transferred should be approved by the appropriate faculty advisor and/or UVA Engineering School instructor (for equivalent course review) before they are taken. Courses to be transferred cannot be taken in the same term one is graduating; the transfer form must be processed at least two weeks prior to the graduation date, including receipt of official transcript with final grade. Transfer forms can be found on the UVA SEAS Graduate Enrolled Student Forms page.
Program Assessment Forms
The School of Engineering and Applied Science requires three program outcome assessment forms for all graduate Master of Engineering students. There are five program assessment forms in total, but only three will be completed for each student before degree completion. A faculty member familiar with one's work and from one’s department should complete the forms. Often this is done in one’s last semester.
Students apply to graduate via the Student Information System (SIS). If you are not registered for a course at UVA during your final semester, you are required to register in some capacity so that your student status will be active (check with the Engineering School's Graduate Registrar's Office for assistance as this must be arranged administratively). Deadlines: For the Fall semester (December graduation), Degree applications are due by October 1. For Spring semester (May graduation), the deadline is February 1. For summer term (August graduation), applications are due by June 1.
