Safety Circuit Rider Program (SCR)
Reducing vehicle crashes and improving overall roadway safety are the key goals of the Safety Circuit Rider (SCR) program. One-on-one technical assistance, road safety assessments and safety-focused transportation training are some of the featured services offered to local agencies.
Together, the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC), the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and UVA’s Center for Transportation Research launched the Virginia Safety Circuit Rider program to improve safety on the 11,000 miles of streets and roadways maintained by cities, towns and local agencies in Virginia.
What is a Safety Circuit Rider?
Traditionally, a circuit rider is a person who travels the “circuit” bringing services to a region or local area. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), ‘safety circuit riders’ can have a significant impact on the reduction of crashes on local roads, leveraging low cost improvements and road safety assessments to mitigate roadway safety issues.
