    NSF CAREER Award!

    February 26, 2021

Dr. Zhou has won the prestigious 2021 NSF CAREER Award! The title of his CAREER proposal is "CAREER: A Novel Computational Thermodynamics Framework with Intrinsic Chemical Short-Range Order". This CAREER Award is jointly sponsored by two NSF programs, Condensed Matter and Materials Theory (CMMT) and Metals and Metal Nanostructure (MMN). We thank program managers Dr. Daryl Hess (CMMT) and Dr. Judith Yang (MMN) for their kind support. We also thank the help from colleagues at UVA MSE and SEAS. This award would not be possible without the hard work from all the Zhou group members, especially Chu-Liang! See also the UVA news coverage: CAREER Award: Opening Vistas for Materials Design.

HERO coating team funded by ARPA-E

    November 18, 2020

Dr. Zhou will participate in a research team to develop a High-Entropy Rare-Earth Oxides (HERO) coating for protecting refractory alloys used in turbine engines. The team is funded by the ULTIMATE program in Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).

    Our first paper published!

    January 28, 2020

The first paper led by Kang from our group "First-principles investigation of the phase stability and early stages of precipitation in Mg-Sn alloys" was published in Physical Review Materials and was selected as the Editors' Suggestions. Congratulations!

Reducing the cost, increasing the strength of Mg alloys

    July 30, 2019

Dr. Zhou received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) "DMREF/Collaborative Research: Low Cost, High Strength and Ductile Mg Alloys". He will be collaborating with fellow MSE and Cornell faculty on an investigation into alloy design strategies involving Guinier-Preston zones, which are nanoscale precipitates in alloys. Our group will be responsible for leading the modeling components investigating the Guinier-Preston zone structure and thermodynamic properties in Mg alloys.
