Preparing students to engineer for social good

Through our research, teaching, and engagement with multiple communities, the Department of Engineering and Society aims to to empower and motivate the next generation of engineering professionals so that they are capable of making creative, ethical, and inspired contributions to the design of our socio-technical future.

One of the few engineering schools in the nation where ethics and STS are embedded in the curriculum

Through the Department of Engineering and Society in the UVA School of Engineering students take the required Engineering Ethics and STS (Science, Technology and Society) courses. This coursework is taught by faculty in the engineering school who have training and workplace experience in these disciplines. By centering this instruction in the school, the coursework emphasizes engineering practice and the engineering profession.

This approach sets us apart from most engineering schools.
