My research group participated in a session, “Building Your Future”, for the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Science Summer Camp sponsored by the Center for Diversity in Engineering at UVA. The session was a success and we were able to show middle school students some of the cool things about Civil Engineering. During the session, we discussed the disciplines of civil engineering, performed some deflection calculations, tested concrete in compression, tested steel and nylon in tension, demonstrated the behavior of our ASCE Steel Bridge under load (live load), and visited to two bridge. My group did an excellent job working with these future engineers and scientists. The session was fun and I am looking forward to doing this again in the future.
