Jonathan Beever

About

Jonathan Beever is an ethicist and environmental philosopher focused on questions of values, relations, and digital technologies. Beever's research examines ethical implications of intersections among human and nonhuman animals, technologies, and environments both digital and "analog."

His work in ethics and science has been supported by the National Science Foundation. His NSF-funded institutional transformation grant (2020-2026) studied the intersections of individual value foundations and institutional ethics frameworks in the process of STEM enculturation. As co-investigator and ethics lead on the NSF-supported CCRI project, VERA, he worked with engineers and computer scientists to build infrastructure to improve access to and engagement in XR (virtual, mixed and augmented reality) research. Meta has supported him and an ECE colleague on a collaborative project to examine neuroethical implications of EMG-based neuromotor systems.

At the national level, Beever serves as Board Member and Chair-Elect for the Association of Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE), Board Member of the International Association for Environmental Philosophy (IAEP),  as a member of the Ethics Board of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and as an co-director of the Online Ethics Center (OEC).
