“Exercise during chemotherapy for breast cancer – can we preserve functional capacity?”
Chemotherapy with breast cancer has made it highly survivable; however, chemotherapeutic agents are associated with significant cardiovascular toxicities. In fact, in breast cancer survivors >65 years of age, CVD competes with cancer as the major cause of mortality. VO2peak or cardiorespiratory fitness is a major predictor of morbidity and mortality and is adversely affected by chemotherapy. In this talk, we examine the value of exercise training initiated prior to and, continued during chemotherapy for the preservation of VO2peak and the central and peripheral determinants of the Fick equation (cardiac and skeletal muscle).
Speaker Bio
Dr. Sid Angadi is a tenured associate professor in the department of Kinesiology at UVA and a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. He’s a cardiovascular physiologist who uses exercise as a model to understand health and disease. His work over the last decade with colleagues at the Mayo Clinic (prior to arriving at UVA) and at UVA has focused on examining the interactions between exercise and chemotherapeutic drugs to mitigate their cardiovascular and skeletal muscle toxicities, to mitigate the loss of functional capacity, and enhance survivorship in patients with breast cancer.
