CE 3700- Properties and Behavior of Materials
Concrete Egg Protection Device
The Concrete Egg Protection Device (EPD) competition is derived from a similar competition host biennially by the American Concrete Institute (ACI). In the EPD competition, student teams are tasked with designing and fabricating a small reinforced (mortar) concrete frame to resist a series of impact loads. After fabrication, the frames are tested for resistance to impact through a sequence of drop tests, with the winning team determined based on considerations of the maximum height of drop sustained, the number of drops achieve and lightest weight design. The goal of the project is promote hands-on learning experiences related to application of civil engineering materials, but also to “reinforce” topics covered in CE 3700 and provide additional context to their application.
The winners of this year's competition are Daniel Hume, Jessie Ferrari, Ian Crouse, Nina Vascotto, and Eddie Tiernan.
