About

Andreas Beling's research interests center on integrated photonic technologies and photodetectors for optical communications, microwave photonics, and quantum applications.

Andreas Beling received the Diploma in physics (M.Sc.) from the University of Bonn, Germany, in 2000 and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Technical University Berlin, Germany, in 2006. He was a staff scientist in the photonics division at the Heinrich-Hertz-Institut in Berlin in 2001-2006, a Research Associate at the University of Virginia in 2006-2008, and has two years of industry experience as a project manager working on coherent receivers for fiber optic communication systems. He returned to UVA in late 2010 as a Research Scientist and became Assistant Professor in 2013. Andreas Beling has authored or co-authored more than 250 technical papers, three book-chapters, and six patents. Professional service includes leadership roles at major international photonics conferences, serving as Technical Program Subcommittee Chair for the Optical Society of America (OSA) Advanced Photonics Congress, Integrated Photonics Research, Silicon and Nano Photonics (2017), and the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (2013); Program Chair (2018) and Conference Chair (2019) for Integrated Photonics Research, Silicon and Nano Photonics at the OSA Advanced Photonics Congress; and Technical Program Committee member for the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (2021–2024), the European Conference on Optical Communication (2018–2022), and the IEEE International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (2015, 2016, 2024). He has been an Associate Editor of the IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology from 2014-2020 and he served as the Primary Guest Editor of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics Special Issue on Optical Detectors in 2017. Dr. Beling is a senior member of the IEEE and an Optica Fellow.
