Center for Hardware and Embedded Systems Security and Trust

The University of Virginia is a founding member of the Center for Hardware and Embedded Systems Security and Trust (CHEST), a National Science Foundation Industry–University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC).

Professor JAMES H. LAMBERT, director of the Center for Risk Management of Engineering Systems, is the UVA site director of the CENTER FOR HARDWARE AND EMBEDDED SYSTEMS SECURITY AND TRUST, known as CHEST. Professor Lambert is leading the organizion's focus on integrated systems, embedded-applications, and risk analysis.

CHEST is an Industry–University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) funded by the NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION at six university sites (UVA, University of Cincinnati, University of Texas at Dallas, University of California, Davis, University of Connecticut, and Northeastern University) with matching funding from industry, government, and military MEMBERS. The initial five-year funding of the CHEST is expected to exceed $9 million.

The NSF's Industry–University Cooperative Research Centers (IUCRCS) program enables collaborative research with relevance to industry by multi-member partnerships. The CHEST IUCRC is focusing on the needs of industry in the security of hardware of cyberphysical systems and the internet-of-things embedded systems and devices.

The Center's primary research goal is to understand the risk and resilience of systems with embedded devices through innovations to methodologies of risk analysis and systems engineering. Initial research topics that are led at UVA include: Resource allocation to the security of critical devices in large-scale systems, tracking emergent and future conditions of the device supply chain, and system resilience to attacks on networks of interconnected devices.
