About

Carl T. Herakovich is Professor Emeritus as Director of the Applied Mechanics Program in the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Henry L. Kinnier Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia. His most significant academic contributions are concerned with mechanics of fibrous composite materials. He was the Founding Director of the NASA Virginia Tech Composites Program during his tenure as a professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Tech. Herakovich has written three books, authored or co- authored more than 130 papers, served as editor of seven books, and held leadership positions in engineering organizations. He also has had a distinguished athletic career.

Engineering leadership positions include: Chair of the Applied Mechanics Division and Vice President of Basic Engineering for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Secretary and President of the Society of Engineering Science (SES), Secretary of the United States National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM), U. S. Delegate to the International Union on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), inaugural Director, Institute for Materials Science, Virginia Center for Innovative Technology.

His most significant athletic accomplishment was leading the nation in scoring in 1958 with 168 points in 8 games as a member of the Rose Polytechnic Institute (now Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) undefeated football team. He was Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Rose-Hulman for two years. Carl was known as “Rocky” during his athletic career.

Academic Career

Herakovich earned a B. S. degree in civil engineering from Rose Polytechnic Institute (now Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) in 1959, M. S. in Mechanics from The University of Kansas in 1962, and PhD in Mechanics from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1968. He completed sabbaticals at École Polytechnique (1980-81) and École Normale Supérieure de Cachan (now École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay) (1993), both universities in Paris, France, and NSF Summer Institutes at the University of New Mexico (1963) and Oklahoma State University (1964).

He taught mechanics courses at The University of Kansas, Rose Polytechnic Institute, Illinois Institute of Technology, Virginia Tech, and the University of Virginia. He was a faculty member in the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department at Virginia Tech from 1967-87 and was the founding Director of the NASA-Virginia Tech Composites Program from its inception in 1974 until he left the university in 1987. He completed his active university career as the Henry L. Kinnier Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Applied Mechanics Program in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia. He served as the advisor for fifty-four graduate students.

Research Contributions

Significant contributions related to composite materials include his book Mechanics of Fibrous Composites (Wiley, 1998), interlaminar stresses, negative Poisson ratios, Iosipescu shear test, microprocessor-based data acquisition, finite element analysis, inelastic response, resin and metal matrix composites, damage and failure, thermal and radiation effects, fiber orthotropy, and delamination in composite structures.

Contributions in plasticity centered on the application of a minimum rate principal as a quadratic programming problem for elastic-plastic torsion by finite element analysis.
