About
I am conducting research with Prof. Daniel Otero-Leon, focusing on healthcare applications for personalized medicine by developing disease prevention policies. Currently, I am working on projects related to mental health in children in the U.S. and how to apply mathematical modeling and stochastic optimization methods (primarily Markov modeling, Markov decision processes, and Monte Carlo simulation) to simulate the course of the disease and find solutions.
I chose systems engineering because this field's approach to solving problems is holistic. I believe we live in a world where to find accurate solutions, we need to incorporate different sciences. I am passionate about finding solutions to health problems, and I decided to commit to the PhD program at UVA because I found that same passion in the faculty members. They, along with the community, are always willing to collaborate and help you succeed.
My advice for prospective students is to listen and ask questions to older students about their experiences at UVA. Also, try to maintain active communication with your advisor. Think of them as your mentor; your success is their success. Share your struggles, expectations, and goals with them.
Outside of school and research, I enjoy traveling and discovering new places. I also love baking and trying new restaurants. In my free time, I like going on walks, doing Pilates, and cycling. Additionally, I enjoy playing Scrabble and Monopoly, as well as attending the ballet or the theater to watch a good play.
