Dr. Zhao's research focuses on developing unconventional bioelectronics assisted by AI to advance precision health. His team designs intelligent sensors and robotics that revolutionize the way we diagnose, monitor, and treat various diseases.

Graduate Students

Minghao Liu

Minghao Liu

Minghao is an PhD student in Mechanical Engineering. His research explores the design of wearable devices that enable more precise measurement and monitoring of physiological indicators such as heart rate and blood biomarkers. Beyond his research, he enjoys staying active through fitness and swimming, loves to travel, and has a strong passion for reading novels.
Jeff Cheng

Jeff Cheng

Jeff is a visiting student from George Washington University. He currently is pursuing a graduate degree in Electrical Engineering. His research focuses on sensors, wearable devices, and medical instruments, with a strong emphasis on integrating these technologies with artificial intelligence for smart healthcare applications. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, playing basketball, and photography.

Undergraduate Students

Saman Fatima

Saman Fatima

Saman is pursuing a BS in Computer & Electrical Engineering at UVA. Her research interests include machine learning, natural language processing, predictive modeling, digital signal processing, robotics, embedded systems, and cybersecurity. Outside the lab, she mentors students in STEM, leads robotics outreach programs, and enjoys music, gaming, exploring new technologies, and traveling.
Aymen Hamid

Aymen Hamid

Aymen is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Virginia, with strong interests in soft robotics, wearable devices, and emerging sensor technologies. At UVA, he is actively involved in the Solar Car team and the Engineering Student Council, where he contributes to collaborative engineering projects and student leadership initiatives. Outside of academics, he enjoys playing soccer, fishing, hiking, and exploring new places.
Joseph

Benjamin Joseph

Ben's research focuses on assistive technologies that integrate motorized systems with AI-driven data analysis. Alongside the AIME Lab, his team sets new standards for accessibility while creating smarter solutions for students with neuromuscular disorders.
Chloe

Chloe Lu

Chloe is currently studying mechanical engineering. Her research focuses on understanding the applications of artificial intelligence in advanced materials and mechanics. This includes materials selection, device prototyping, and analyzing how engineered systems interact with the human body. In her free time, Chloe enjoys traveling, fishing, and playing mobile games.
Lily Orabi

Lily Orabi

Lily is pursuing a B.A. in Cognitive Science with a concentration in Computer Science. Her academic interests include artificial intelligence, health technology, and applications of data science in healthcare. She is particularly interested in how technology can enhance medical decision-making and patient care. Outside of academics, Lily enjoys reading, learning new languages, and traveling.
Muhammad Abbas

Muhammad Abbas

Muhammad is pursuing a BS in Computer & Electrical Engineering at UVA. His research interests include medical devices, robotics, machine learning, and embedded systems. Outside the lab, he is a proactive member of MARS, VA motorsports and spends his time working on personal projects. This summer he will be joining Amazon as a Software Development Intern. In his free time, he enjoys learning new languages, mentoring kids interested in computer science/electrical engineering, hiking, listening to music, and watching tv shows.
Adhana Costa

Adhana Costa

Adhana is pursuing a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. She is very interested in medical device innovation and very excited by how artificial intelligence is transforming the healthcare field. Outside of research, Adhana is involved in an array of engineering clubs, and loves to go to the gym, hang out with friends, and spend time outdoors.
