Savannah is interested in coastal communities grappling with the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels and heightened rainfall intensity. She explores the role of modeling and IoT in fortifying stormwater management systems, aiming to empower these communities to proactively address and adapt to future challenges.

Sergio’s research during his postdoc was on urban-coastal flood modeling exploring the role of rainfall infiltration of flooding impacts. He is currently a hydrologic modeler at the US Department of Energy at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Ciara Horne, Ph.D.

Ciara’s dissertation research used data science and GIS to measure how the presence of dams and levees affect the flooding vulnerability of marginalized populations in the U.S. and thus contribute to public health and environmental injustices. She is now a postdoc fellow with the US Census.

Jake was part of the Cyber-Physical Systems NRT program, and his dissertation evaluated stormwater quality and quantity compliance practices in Virginia, including the use of stormwater best management practices and environmental markets. He is now working as a stormwater engineer with the Utah Department of Transportation.

Linnea’s PhD research was at the interface of water resources engineering, environmental science, data science, and policy. She was a School of Data Science Fellow and was co-advised with Prof. Larry Band. She will be a Knauss Fellow at NOAA.

Alex researched smart stormwater management for coastal communities. His dissertation investigated the use of crowdsourcing, in particular Personal Weather Stations (PWS), for capturing rainfall during extreme weather events in Norfolk, VA. He is now a postdoc at UC-Davis.

Jeff completed his PhD in the use of cyber-physical system approaches for smart stormwater management to mitigate flooding impacts. He is now an Assistant Professor at Oklahoma State University after completing a postdoc with the USGS in Middleton, WI as part of the USGS Office of Water Information (OWI) Data Science team through a Mendenhall Research Fellowship.

Mohamed completed his PhD at UVA working on the HydroShare project, researching ways to represent hydrologic models within a resource-based hydrologic information system, and designing a flood warning system for VDOT. He is now a professor at Cairo University and senior engineer at Dar.

Bakinam completed her PhD at UVA on modeling regional-scale hydrologic systems to understand water availability and drought. Her work is part of the DataNet Federation Consortium (DFC) project using iRODS to create workflows for hydrologic modeling. After serving as a postdoc at UVA, she joined Dewberry in 2019 as part of their resilience group.
