El Capitan: The World's Fastest Computer
Abstract:
El Capitan, the supercomputer recently deployed by Livermore Computing (LC), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's (LLNL's) supercomputing center, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), was recently recognized by the Top500 as the world's fastest computer. The system, which is the first US exascale system focused on national security, attained a sustained performance of over 1.74 Exaflops. It features the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) MI300A, the first datacenter Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) as well as other significant innovations such as HPE's Rabbit modules. This talk will provide an overview of its system architecture, including details of the AMD MI300A. It will conclude with a discussion of future directions for LC that are intended to maintain its status as a world leading high-performance computing center.
About the Speaker:
As Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Livermore Computing (LC) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Bronis R. de Supinski formulates LLNL's large-scale computing strategy and oversees its implementation. He frequently interacts with supercomputing leaders and oversees many collaborations with industry and academia. In addition to his work with LLNL, which he joined after obtaining his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Virginia (UVA) in 1998, Bronis is also a Professor of Exascale Computing at Queen's University of Belfast. He is a Fellow of the ACM and the IEEE.
