Title: Microwave Acoustic-wave Integrated Circuits on Lithium Niobate
Abstract: Acoustic waves at microwave frequencies are the basis for numerous applications including microwave filters, oscillators, delay lines, and sensors, and recently they are emerging as a versatile quantum platform. Acoustic waves on solids feature five-orders-of-magnitude shorter wavelengths, do not radiate into free space, and have much higher quality (Q) factors than their electromagnetic counterparts. In this talk, I will discuss our recent progress in integrated microwave-frequency acoustic-wave devices and circuits on the lithium niobate platform. We achieved phase and amplitude modulations of guided acoustic waves by electrical voltages and thermal effects, and demonstrated frequency shifting, nonreciprocal transmission of acoustic waves. Furthermore, we demonstrated acoustic-wave computing based on the nonlinear piezoelectricity of lithium niobate. These results pave the way towards an on-chip acoustic-wave integrated circuits for next-generation communication, computing, and quantum engineering.
Bio: Linbo Shao is an Assistant Professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech and a faculty member of Virginia Tech Center for Quantum Information Science and Engineering (VTQ). He received his Ph.D. in Engineering Science in 2019 and M.S. in Applied Physics in 2016 from Harvard University, and B.S. in microelectronics in 2014 from Peking University. His current research interests include integrated acoustic-wave and acousto-optic devices and circuits on the lithium niobate, optomechanical devices and sensors.
