The University of Virginia Board of Visitors has named Mircea R. Stan, assistant director of the Center for Research in Intelligent Storage and Processing in Memory and a professor in the Engineering School, as Virginia Microelectronics Consortium Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. An endowed distinguished professorship is among the most prestigious appointments for a UVA faculty member and signifies the individual has achieved the highest stature and exemplary accomplishment in a discipline or area of research. “This is a well-deserved honor for an exceptional scholar,” UVA Engineering Dean Craig H. Benson said. “He exemplifies our school's mission to create and disseminate knowledge to make a better world.” During his 23-year career at UVA, Stan has contributed to a number of high-profile, multi-disciplinary research initiatives, including the Center for Automata Processing, the Link Lab for cyber-physical systems and the Center for Research in Intelligent Storage and Processing in Memory, a UVA Engineering-led, multi-university initiative to remove the bottleneck between computer processors and memory, unlocking the power of big data. As an expert on the design of high-performance, low-power chips and circuits, Stan will help lead the center's research on 3-D chip architecture, thermal and power optimization and circuit design. “Professor Stan is a world-class leader in low-power VLSI -- one who has left an indelible mark with his research on power- and temperature-aware circuit design,” said Nikolaos Sidiropoulos, Louis T. Rader Professor and Chair of the Charles L. Brown Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. “We are truly fortunate to have him among our faculty, connecting UVA to the broader Virginia microelectronics community through his appointment as VMEC chair.” Stan is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a distinguished lecturer for several societies, including the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. He has published more than 250 papers and has been co-author on five best-paper awards since 2002. An active keynote speaker, Stan is also an assistant editor in chief of the IEEE Transactions on VLSI Systems, a senior editor of the IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology and an associate editor of IEEE Design & Test magazine. “I am honored to be recognized by UVA,” Stan said. “I have enjoyed contributing my expertise to cross-cutting research that will help create the knowledge and technologies of the future.”
