William Guilford, Associate Professor of BME, has accepted a three-year appointment as UVA Engineering Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education, replacing Lloyd Harriott, effective immediately.
Will joined the faculty at UVA in 1997, and has established himself as a leader in biomedical engineering education nationally. He is a recipient of the Harold S. Morton Award for Teaching and the UVA Distinguished Professor Award. He continually develops improved pedagogical approaches, particularly in the area of design, and better approaches to learning assessment. He also has served as director of educational innovations, responsible for experiential and online learning. Under his leadership, our Virginia Engineering Online program has risen quickly in the national rankings and now stands at No.12.
In addition to the nominal expectations of the position, Will hopes in the coming years to promote and advance high-impact practices in the School, including experiential education, study abroad and undergraduate research. He also aims to foster quality mentoring in the execution of these practices, encourage student training in fundamental engineering skills, and improve instructional collaboration between the academic programs of the Engineering School and those of the University at large. He will continue to manage the Experiential Education Funds and Lacy Hall.
Will is an outstanding leader who will continue the excellent work of the Undergraduate Office. The search committee was chaired by Aaron Bloomfield.
