People become engineers because they have a passion for creating knowledge and technologies that serve society. UVA Engineering's "For Good" series shares their voices. Ph.D. candidate Courtney Hill is working on a device that will purify water in peoples' homes, in an effort to address the global challenge of clean drinking water. Her work has taken her as far as Limpopo Province in South Africa, where UVA has a partnership with the University of Venda. Hill's advisor is James Smith, the Henry L. Kinnier Professor of Civil Engineering in the Department of Engineering Systems and Environment.
