Senior financial generalist Sherri Sullivan has kept the UVA Department of Materials Science and Engineering’s budget operations humming for 25 years.

Sherri Sullivan, a senior financial generalist who’s kept the Department of Materials Science and Engineering’s budget operations humming for 25 years, has earned the highest individual employee honor given by the University of Virginia: the Leonard W. Sandridge Outstanding Contributor Award.

“This recognition by my department is beyond humbling and special,” Sullivan said. “I feel grateful my name is associated with this award, as Mr. Sandridge dedicated years of service to the University. I’m forever appreciative.”

In her role as a financial generalist, nearly everyone in MSE depends on Sullivan for everything from departmental budgeting to faculty compensation, grant compliance and procurement processes.

“Sherri is terrific,” said Elizabeth J. Opila, chair of the department and the Rolls Royce Commonwealth Professor of Engineering. “This prestigious award highlights her hard work and values that align with the department’s mission and her position as a role model for the University community.”

Indeed, it wasn’t only her ability to navigate complex, multi-institutional research funding and multimillion dollar annual research center budgets that led to the award, according to a UVA human resources news release.

“Her contributions extend far beyond her official responsibilities, reflecting her unwavering commitment to the University’s mission and her exceptional ability to mentor and support colleagues,” said the release, which was based on comments from Sullivan’s department co-workers and faculty.

In addition to noting her financial expertise in support of her nomination, colleagues particularly cited her willingness to share what she knows and to be a leader in asking questions and finding solutions to benefit the department, School of Engineering and Applied Science, and University.

“Sherri has become a recognized expert in Workday Financials, transitioning from an initial learning phase to serving as a mentor and resource for her colleagues,” the release said.

A diplomatic and skilled communicator, Sullivan has earned the trust, respect and appreciation of her colleagues for her positive attitude and for creating an uplifting work environment.

The Outstanding Contributor Award is named for UVA’s former executive vice president and chief operating officer, who retired in 1993. During Sandridge’s 44 years of service, he was known as an avid champion of UVA staff.

Winners of the prestigious award not only contribute to the University in a positive way, but also enhance internal or public regard for the services provided by UVA and the commonwealth at large.
