When the University of Virginia Office of the Vice President for Research formally announced the 2022 winners of the annual Research Achievement Awards, it’s safe to say the School of Engineering and Applied Science was well represented among their distinguished UVA peers.

Indeed, faculty members from every department in the school were recognized, while UVA Engineering researchers earned three of the nine top individual honors and led the team that won the Research Collaboration Award.

Below is the list of UVA Engineering’s 2022 top Research Achievement Awards winners:

Research Excellence Award
Steven R. Caliari, associate professor of chemical engineering and biomedical engineering

Distinguished Researcher Award
Madhav V. Marathe, professor of computer science, Distinguished Professor of Biocomplexity and division director at the Biocomplexity Institute and Initiative

Public Impact-Focused Award
Bryan W. Berger, associate professor of chemical engineering

Research Collaboration Award
Center for Systems Analysis of Stress-Adapted Cancer Organelles led by co-directors Kevin Janes, John Marshall Money Professor of biomedical engineering, and Matthew J. Lazzara, professor of chemical engineering and biomedical engineering, with team members Cheryl A. Borgman, leadership team research center administrator, Department of Biomedical Engineering; Mohammad Fallahi-Sichani, assistant professor of biomedical engineering; Kristen M. Naegle, associate professor of biomedical engineering and computer science; Jason Papin, professor of biomedical engineering and Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor; and Gustavo K.
