UVA Biomedical Engineering students took time out during office hours with Associate Professor William Guilford to repair some of the 35,000 N95 masks that were part of the National Strategic Stockpile. The masks themselves were fine. However, the elastic bands had, over time, become brittle. The project originated with Adam Momper, administrator of ambulatory programs and performance at UVA Health, and Jack Simpson, director of supply chain operations. Guilford expects it will take about 724 man hours to replace the damaged elastic with 115,583 feet of non-latex elastic banding material. The group is also getting help with the refurbishment by Charlottesville community members, including members of the Charlottesville Derby Dames.
