University of Virginia computer science alumnus Chenyang Lu was recently named the founding director of the AI for Health Institute at Washington University in St. Louis.

Lu, who earned his Ph.D. in 2001 under BP America Professor Emeritus John A. “Jack” Stankovic, is the Fullgraf Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University.

Lu also holds appointments as a professor of anesthesiology and of medicine in Washington University’s School of Medicine, which is ranked among the best in the country.

The multidisciplinary AI for Health Institute at Washington University, or AIHealth, was launched in October 2023 to bring together artificial intelligence and health care researchers to solve complex health problems using advanced data-driven approaches.

Lu Recognized for Outstanding Work in Multiple Computer Science Fields

In addition to artificial intelligence for health applications, Lu — once a student of one of the architects of the computer science fields of embedded and real-time systems, cyber-physical systems and the internet of things — has become internationally known in these areas for his own work, which has been cited more than 25,000 times.

A fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Lu serves as editor-in-chief of ACM Transactions on Cyber-Physical Systems, chair of the IEEE Technical Community on Real-Time Systems, and as program or general chair of leading conferences on the internet of things, real-time systems and cyber-physical systems. He previously served as editor-in-chief of ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks.

He received the Outstanding Technical Achievement Award and Leadership Award from the IEEE Technical Community on Real-Time Systems in 2022. He has also been recognized by a Test of Time Award from the ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems, an Influential Paper Award from the IEEE Real-Time and Embedded Technology and Applications Symposium, and several best or outstanding paper awards — including a 2023 Distinguished Paper Award of the Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies.
