Craig H. Benson, dean of theUniversity of Virginia School of Engineeringand an internationally distinguished environmental engineer, has been elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. AAAS awards the lifetime honor to those with “extraordinary achievements in advancing science,” according to the organization's release. Benson and 415 other fellows from around the world, who will be announced in the November 28 edition ofScience,have “diverse accomplishments that include pioneering research, leadership within their field, teaching and mentoring, fostering collaborations and advancing public understanding of science.” Benson is amongfive UVA faculty memberselected 2018 fellows: Douglas W. DeSimone, professor and chair of cell biology; Wladek Minor, professor of molecular physiology and biological physics; Brian A. Nosek, professor of psychology; and Lukas K. Tamm, professor and chair of molecular physiology and biological physics. UVA now has a total of 38 AAAS fellows. “It is an honor to be recognized by an organization that has done so much to advance multidisciplinary science, engineering and innovation for the betterment of humanity,” Benson said, “and to be included among AAAS fellows who have dedicated their lives to creating and disseminating knowledge.”
