Icing

The FRIL Aerospace Icing Facility allows our researchers to study ice accretion, adhesion and prevention on aerospace surfaces created at high-impact speeds. The centerpiece of the facility is a walk-in cold chamber.

Icing Station

Specs

Temperature - Can reach -24°C with an internal dimension of 1.8m × 1.8m × 2.3m

Spray nozzles - Fitted with NASA Glenn Icing Research Wind Tunnel Mod-1 spray nozzles

Icing cloud - Can create an icing cloud of 20 µm super-cooled water droplets to impact and form ice on blades

Blade rotation - Blades can be rotated at a maximum of 1800 RPM, resulting in droplet impact speeds of 40 m/s

Blade interchangeability - Blades are easily removable to allow for icing studies on blades with different aerodynamic profiles
