  • When the Cavalier Autonomous Racing team competed in 2021, it had just five students. Today, more than 40 students are involved.
  • Team principal Madhur Behl, associate professor of Computer Science and associate professor of Systems and Information Engineering, founded and continues to lead the effort.
  • Behl is an internationally recognized leader in autonomous vehicles and robotics whose research has been cited hundreds of times.
  • Cavalier Autonomous Racing is associated with the Cyber-Physical Systems Link Lab at UVA.
  • Alumni of Cavalier Autonomous Racing have gone on to careers at Amazon, Exponent, Leidos, SpaceX and other major employers.  
  • Cavalier Autonomous Racing can be shortened to “CAR” or “CAVCAR” after first reference.
  • The cars in the Indy Autonomous Challenge are all identical Dallara AV-24 models. The competitive difference is the work the students put into programming the robot cars.
