CHEERS 2022, UVA's annual Chemical Engineering Research Symposium, took place Friday, March 11, bringing together graduate students, faculty, alumni and industry experts to showcase research in the department and create networking opportunities for students.

Bev Miller (left, with fellow ChemE Ph.D. student Ashley Conley), a chemical engineering Ph.D. student in assistant professor Steven Caliari's biomaterials lab at the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science, recently attended the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Annual Meeting in Boston with support from a 2021 Women in Chemical Engineering Travel Award.

Congrats to UVA ChemE majors Jack Kilduff, Brandon Hudson, Chris Hawkins, Rebecca Brown, Patrick Bruns and Ethan Kutner, and their advisors Eric Anderson and George Prpich, on their outstanding performance in AIChE's 2021 ChemE-Sports Competition.Two University of Virginia undergraduate teams from the Department of Chemical Engineering competed in this year's competition held at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' Annual Meeting, which recently concluded its in-person portion in Boston.

UVA Engineering joins the West Potomac (Virginia) High School Wolverine nation to celebrate its outstanding student athletes, coaches and administrators. David L. Green, associate professor of materials science, chemical, and mechanical engineering is among the 2020 inductees in the West Potomac Athletic Hall of Fame.Green grew up in Gum Springs, an African-American neighborhood in Alexandria, Va. Green recalled that during the summers and extended holidays, he and other kids in his neighborhood played a cadre of sports, 10 to 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

American Institute of Chemists Award

Congratulations to the recipients of this year's chemical engineering graduate student awards, Kevin Chang, Kevin Gu (pictured), Luke Huelsenbeck, Lu Yang and Mara Kuenen. Find award details here.

While adjusting to the rigors of her second year as a UVA Engineering student and first year in the chemical engineering program, Alexa “Lexi” Cuomo of Clifton, Virginia, also became an NCAA national champion as a member of the University of Virginia women's swim and dive team.
The Cavaliers ran away with the 2021 national title with 491 points, followed by N.C. State in second with 354 points and the University of Texas with 344.5. Virginia is the first Atlantic Coast Conference team to become NCAA women's swimming and diving national champions.

Chemical engineering Ph.D. student Ryan Zelinsky has received funding from the Virginia Space Grant Consortium to supplement his dissertation research.
Zelinsky works in the environmental catalysis lab of professor and chair of the department, William S. Epling. The group's research focuses on improving the performance and longevity of catalysts used in industrial processes, often to reduce pollution.

UVA associate professor of chemical and biomedical engineering Bryan Berger is providing his expertise in hemp research to an industrial gases company.
Berger is collaborating with Air Products to study the benefits of cryogenic freezing on cannabinoids found in industrial hemp from the time of harvest through extraction and final processing, according to a company news release.
