Professor Berger joined the faculty at the University of Virginia in January 2006. He served on the Cornell faculty from 1968-2005. He was a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a member of the Governing Board and a past president of the IEEE Information Theory Group, and a past editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Engineering Education, Sigma Xi, and Tau Beta Pi.
