A writing resource for UVA Engineering graduate students and postdocs

UVA Engineering provides free, scheduled one-on-one writing consultation for graduate students and postdocs. We offer support and strategies to help you improve your writing of all kinds - theses and dissertations, class assignments, job search documents, and more.

The Graduate Writing Lab currently provides one-on-one consultation appointments for you to receive objective and constructive analysis of your writing, with an eye to common composition issues such as paragraph or sentence structure, grammar, argument development, organization and clarity, and ESL support from a trained Writing Consultant.  Technical writing support will be also be added soon.

Our Services

Writing Consultants provide appointments for Master’s and Doctoral students, as well as postdocs within UVA Engineering. Writing Consultants meet by appointment only. Appointments scheduled for 50 minutes in length and can be made up to 4 weeks in advance. You don’t have to have a completed draft of your writing to make an appointment with a Writing Consultant, but we do ask that you bring a few items along to your appointment:

  1. One printed copy of your work for your writing consultant to use.
  2. One printed or digital copy of your writing for you to use and take notes on.
  3. The guidelines for the writing you would like reviewed (assignment description and grading rubric if available, call for applications or proposals, abstract or article guidelines, etc.).

If you are unable to attend a scheduled appointment, please cancel at least 24 hours in advance to allow us to fill that time with another student who needs it. If you are more than 10 minutes late for a scheduled appointment, you will need to reschedule your appointment. After your second no-show, you must meet with the Director before you will be allowed to schedule additional appointments.
